NVMS have provided a consistent and professional service to Iluka's Gingin Operations since 2004. They always respond quickly to address issues to ensure we continue to comply with License monitoring requirements. Their knowledge has been invaluable in designing and adapting a noise monitoring system to suit our circumstances, resulting in the logging of noise data for more than 99% of the time, an excellent outcome for Gingin Operations. NVMS are experts in noise technology and understand how to best help those of us who aren't, as well as patiently providing a simple explanation for the issues. I would not hesitate in recommending NVMS to other companies needing assistance in the area of noise monitoring.

Online Noise Monitoring
Online noise monitoring is defined as a permanent or transportable noise monitoring station (or stations) which measure and transmit noise data. NVMS have 20 years experience in the development and delivery of these systems and have worked closely with both industry and regulatory authorities to provide practical noise monitoring solutions.
History of the OmniLogger
In the early 1990's NVMS were selected to represent Brüel & Kjær in Australia. Using their reliable and accurate hand held sound level meter as an 'acoustic front end' and interfacing this with our own data logger (pictured above) we were able to provide industry with solar powered and highly efficient noise monitoring solutions which are still working hard today. Although industry has been logging noise for decades, technology has often fallen short of users needs. Specifically:
- Logged data typically 'overall' levels plus some statistical data
- Meets regulatory needs BUT users still driving everywhere to listen to noise (are those high noise levels caused by us or frogs / wind / traffic etc)
- Digital Tape recorders offer some help but highly labour intensive and mechanical
Enabling Technologies
So how could we improve on these systems? We waited until technology caught up with our users' needs and wants. Some key requirements are:
- Real time frequency analysis
- Wide dynamic range ( > 80 dB )
- Affordable solid state audio recording onto flash media
- Low power P4 computing with adequate processing power
- Outdoor long-range wireless networking
NV-4000 Online Noise Monitoring Systems
The latest solution from NVMS is the NV-4000. We have once again used what is arguably the world's finest acoustic 'front-end' from Brüel & Kjær.
We use a Brüel & Kjær Type 2250 Hand-held Sound Level Analyser to acquire over-all and frequency specific information. The 2250 is a precision integrating type 1 sound level meter which meets all current international standards. Most importantly, this instrument can be easily removed for periodic traceable calibration. This capability provides very robust legal integrity to the noise measurements.
The combination of the OmniLogger and a Brüel & Kjær acoustic front-end, deployed in a weatherproof environmental enclosure and provided with solar power and a radio telemetry system provides everything you need to fulfill your online noise monitoring obligations.
Key specifications of this system include:
- Noise Floor < 15dB(A)
- Very wide dynamic range ( > 120dB)
- Broadband, Statistical and 1/3rd Octave Band parameters logged with total flexibility
- Event triggered Audio sampling (MP3,WAV)
- Local data caching
